in the Mothers’ Union.
Mothers’ Union began in 1876 and is one of the first women-led organisations: an international Christian movement with members across the world.
This page introduces the movement, its roots, its worldwide life, and how the work is taking shape across Cyprus and the Gulf.
DEEP ROOTS
From Mary Sumner’s vision to a worldwide movement.

Mothers’ Union began in 1876 through Mary Sumner, who saw that parents needed encouragement, prayer and practical support as they raised children in the Christian faith. What began as a local gathering grew into a movement with a much wider purpose: to strengthen family life, nurture faith, and bring practical care to communities.
Mary Sumner’s vision was never narrow. It was rooted in the ordinary life of families, but it reached beyond one parish, one class, one culture or one generation. That inheritance still matters here: Mothers’ Union in Cyprus and the Gulf is shaped by the same conviction that prayer, family life and service belong together.

Prayer
Prayer is not an ornament to the work; it is the rhythm that holds members together across places, branches and communities.

Mothers’ Union strengthens family life in its many forms, supporting parents, caregivers, children, marriages, households and those facing difficulty.
Practical Care
Practical Action
Members serve where they are placed: in churches, communities, homes, schools, projects and local networks of care.
A movement of faith, family life and practical care.
Mothers’ Union brings members together to live out Christian faith through prayer, community and practical action. Its work is concerned with the life of families, the support of parents and caregivers, the nurture of children, the protection of the vulnerable, and service shaped by the needs of local communities.

WHAT GUIDES THE WORK
Commitments that shape the movement.
Mothers’ Union is guided by commitments that hold together faith, family life, prayer, social responsibility and care in adversity. In Cyprus and the Gulf, these commitments are lived out through safeguarding, family support, migration awareness, hospitality and practical service.
Supporting parents and caregivers as they nurture children with love, wisdom and faith, while encouraging safe environments where children can grow in security, dignity and hope.
Strengthening a community united in prayer, worship and service, locally and across the worldwide Mothers’ Union.
Promoting dignity, peace and protection for vulnerable people, including those affected by displacement, hardship, unsafe migration, poverty or family strain.
Offering welcome, support and practical help to migrants, refugees, isolated families, lone members, newcomers and those seeking safety or belonging.
Honouring marriage and family life while offering compassionate care to individuals, couples and families facing difficulty, loss, pressure or crisis.
